Norcross Community Market
Know Your Farmer
sponsored by AgSouth Farm Credit
This week we’re pleased to get you “re-aquainted” with Margarie Southard of Simply Southard. We say re-aquainted because many of you will recognize Margarie as she has been with the Norcross Market since the Whistlestop Market days.
A few details about Simply Southard:
The mainstray products of Simply Southard are jams, jellies, preserves, fruit butters, relishes and pickles. They produce about 90% of what goes into their products and what they don’t grow, they buy from other farmers at the market.
Everything they preserve is done by Margarie herself, one batch at a time. Nothing is mass produced, and keeping that personal touch is important to Margarie. She’s constantly listening to her customers and watching what appeals to them, and this means her line up of offerings is always being tweaked. This year she added pickled carrots, jalapeno relish and apple, pecan and fig conserve.
What else is available?
Margarie brings whatever is fresh to the market with her, along with her preserves and pickles. Last week when we visited she had the most beautiful and colorful peppers, as well as bi-color corn. We brought some of the corn home with us, and can personally verify that it tastes wonderful!
Certifications, memberships & future goals
Simply Southard is a proud member of Georgia Grown, and all products are canned in a kitchen inspected by the Department of Agriculture. They have a ServeSafe certification, and a Better Process Control School Certification for all processed items (jams, jellies, pickles, etc.)
Future goals are continued expanding of the product line and expansion of the list of brick and mortar stores carrying their products.
What do you love about Norcross Community Market?
We love asking this question because there are some common threads in the answers, but each farmer also has a unique way of looking at the Market. Margarie said that Norcross Community Market has been awesome from the beginning. It’s a perfect fit for her products. She told us that the customers are always nice, and she loves that they are looking for healthier and more wholesome options than can be found in big grocery stores.
A final word from Margarie of Simply Southard:
“We take great pride in the growing, and making of our products. Basically, we grow it… we pick it… we make it.”
Stop by and visit with Margarie this Saturday and each Saturday through the summer.
The next in the Know Your Farmer series will be coming soon. In the meantime, we would love to have you sign up to receive weekly Southern recipes from Biscuits and Burlap by clicking this link.
Norcross Community Market has been selected to receive a grant from AgSouth Farm Credit as a part of AgSouth’s Think Outside the Store® farmers market grant program.
The funds are designated to be used for promoting the market, and Norcross Community Market was chosen based on our plan to increase public awareness of the market with this “Know Your Farmer” series.
