New to Norcross Community Market this year is Bread and Butter Farms, proudly owned by husband and wife team, Musa and Micole Hasan.
A few details about Bread and Butter
Bread and Butter is located east of Norcross in the Monroe area, and one very unique feature of their farm is that they deliver. And, they deliver as far away as Atlanta. Every Sunday finds them on the road bringing fresh produce directly to your homes. Just give them a call at 404-435-2935 or 770-864-8511 for more details.
At Bread and Butter Farms they’re focused on producing healthy plants from the beginning. Their attention to the microbiology of the soil makes sure young plants have strong roots. A healthy start gives the plants what they need to flourish in the sometimes harsh conditions of Georgia.
Currently the farm is being managed full time by Micole as Musa is employed away from the farm. However, most Saturdays will find them both at the Norcross Market, and they invite you to stop by and say hello.
What does Bread and Butter Produce?
The core of Bread and Butter’s products are vegetables, with an emphasis on greens, but there is a wide variety, and they are sure to have something to satisfy every pallet.
Just feast your eyes on this beautiful Dino Kale and Rainbow Chard.
New this year for Bread and Butter are beets, and they are selling like hotcakes. Try to get to the Norcross Market early to get yours before they run out.
Future Goals and Plans
High on the list of plans for Bread and Butter is a fruit orchard, and they are planning to have a variety of fruits. We can’t wait to see what goes in their orchard.
In addition to the orchard, they are planning to get more involved in Agri-Tourism. In case you’re unfamiliar, this is the business of bringing visitors to farms. The visitors might be groups of school children or adults, as well as individuals interested in learning more about a certain aspect of farming, or just a general overview. These visits can be strictly a tour of the farm, or it might be a hands-on experience, and Musa and Micole are excited about the prospects.
Certifications, Grants, Recognition, Achievements, Memberships
Bread and Butter are very proud of their achievements. They are Certified Naturally Grown which means they don't use any synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or GMO seeds.
They’ve also received a grant through a partnership with Tuskegee University to develop better organic practices for growing watermelons and tomatoes.
As we visit with different farmers throughout the summer we’re asking them all the same question. It will be so interesting to hear all of their answers. We found it especially intriguing that Musa and Micole of Bread and Butter answered the same way as Lovey and Farmer P. from Gilliam’s Gardens. Why Norcross? The diversity of the shopping community was a big factor that attracted them. Having two farm teams answer the same way just reinforces the fact that we are a true community market.
What are you most proud of?
Musa and Micole are proud that they have been able to leave corporate America behind and be successful as farmers. An unpredictable endeavor like farming holds extra challenges, but they’ve made it work, and the pride they feel shows in the beautiful produce they bring to our market each week.
